Conceal Textured Caulk

Sashco Conceal Caulk Application Information
Proper substrate preparation and application are imperative for product longevity.
• Conceal is not a chinking and should be used in joints under 2” wide. If the joints are wider, we recommend Sashco Log Jam Chinking.
• Make certain there is compatibility between your stain and Conceal. Sashco recommends either Sashco’s Capture Stain and Cascade Topcoat System, Transformation Log & Timber, or Transformation Siding and Trim for exterior applications and Symphony Interior clear coat for beautiful long-term protection.
• Best results are obtained when Conceal is applied to clean, stained wood.
• Check the weather forecast. Finishing products are best applied in moderate weather conditions, i.e., out of direct sunlight, in dry, warm conditions.
• Check the surface temperature. Apply Sashco Conceal Caulk when the surface temperature of the wood is between 40°F (4°C) - 90°F (32°C).
• It is always best to use a bond breaker (usually backer rod) before caulking. Sashco strongly recommends the use of backer rod, especially if the home is new and/or the wood is subject to significant movement. If a bond breaker is not used, expect more caulking repairs.
• Tool Conceal to help ensure good contact with the wood surfaces. This will greatly aid adhesion.
• Ideal caulk depth is half of the joint width, but no less than 1/4” and no more than 1/2”.
• Sashco Conceal Caulk is paintable with latex coatings after a minimum of 24 hours curing (longer on wider joints) and after 5 days with most oil-based coatings.
• Cure-Through Time: 3 weeks (1/2" thickness, 70°F, 50% relative humidity).

Sashco Conceal Caulk Surface Preparation
• Best results are obtained when Conceal Caulk is applied to wood that has been previously coated with a compatible and thoroughly cured stain.
• If a Sashco stain is not being used, make certain that the stain is compatible with Conceal Caulk. If the stain is older but still intact, clean the log surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, pollen, bird droppings and other surface contaminants.
• If a stain is applied over Conceal Caulk, it will be tinted the stain color, but will be affected differently than the surrounding wood; therefore, test appearance before widespread use.
• A few coatings, especially those high in wax content, nondrying oils, or silicones may interfere with adhesion, whether they are applied before or after Conceal Caulk. Sashco advises against using Conceal Caulk with such products.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Paintability & Compatibility
• Paintable with latex coatings after a minimum of 24 hours curing (longer on wider joints) and after 5 days with most oil-based coatings.
• Conceal Caulk will adhere to woods treated with most preservatives including borates, pentachlorophenol, and copper compounds.
• Some borate wood preservatives contain glycols or other agents that could interfere with adhesion. Sashco’s PeneTreat® contains no glycols.
• Conceal Caulk is also compatible with insulating glass sealants and most building materials, including foam insulation and vinyl windows.

Recommended Tools & Supplies For Applying Caulking
• Caulking gun(s). Click for Albion Caulking Guns and Tools.
• Closed Cell Backer-Rod in appropriate sizes, or other backing materials such as EPS Foam or Grip Strip.
• Sharp knives suitable for trimming backer-rod.
• Trowels, spatulas, or foam brushes for tooling
• Clean, lint-free rags for wiping down log surfaces, for spills, runs and cleanup.
• Spray adhesive (such as 3M™ 77) for installing backer-rod.
• Staple gun & staples (if necessary to help with backer rod installation)
• Sheets of heavy plastic or canvas to protect job site from spills and inclement weather.
• Adequate quantity of caulking.

How to Tool Sashco Conceal Caulk
• Conceal should be tooled directly after application to ensure good adhesion and a smooth looking bead. Conceal may be tooled with ordinary masonry-type tooling blades, a wetted finger, or a damp polyethylene foam brush.
• Work the material smooth, tooling Conceal tightly to the surfaces, keeping a rag handy for clean up.

How to Apply Sashco Conceal Caulk
•Stacking Application: Apply bead(s) according to the log home manufacturer’s instructions. Stack the next log and repeat. Do not allow caulk to skin over prior to staining.
• Milled Tongue & Groove Logs: Install backer rod into the caulk well of clean, stained logs. Gun Conceal over the backer rod. Tool to ensure a tight seal to the top and bottom of the caulk line.
• Swedish Cope Logs: Gun Conceal into clean, stained joints. Tool to ensure a tight seal to the top and bottom of the caulk line leaving at least ¼” depth of caulk in the center of the joint.
• Cracks & Checks: Install backer rod into a clean, stained check to the appropriate depth. Gun Conceal over the backer rod. Tool Conceal.
• Special Note: Most small checks should not be caulked. Only the larger ones (1/4” or larger) should be sealed with backer rod and caulk.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Clean Up and Storage
• Clean excess product off surfaces (before it cures) with a putty knife and/or a damp rag.
• Tightly wrap nozzles of open cartridges with plastic wrap and a rubber band.
• Dispose of Conceal in accordance with local regulations.
• Do not dispose of in drinking water supplies.
• Hands, surfaces and equipment may be cleaned-up with water.
• Solvents are not required for clean-up.
• Store Conceal chinking in a clean, dry place and out of direct sunlight.
• Do not allow the material to freeze.
