Sashco Conceal Textured Caulk's light texture simulates the natural roughness of wood and delivers performance that's hard to see. Sashco Conceal's 7 colors blend in with the most popular stains used on log homes. The combination of color and texture makes it hard to see where the caulking ends and the logs begin. The caulking disappears into the woodwork, and your home is sealed from the elements. Although the caulking is hard to see, Sashco Conceal delivers performance. It outperforms all other textured caulks currently available.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Features & Benefits
• Water-based – easy to apply and clean up.
• Lightly Textured – blends in with wood grain.
Ultra-elastic - Will not crack, tear or pull away.
• Matches the most popular stain colors.
• Excellent early water resistance.
• Freeze-thaw stable.
• Resistant to rainfall in 1-4 hours.

Where to Use Sashco Conceal Textured Caulk
Anywhere you want to match the color and texture of your wood surface, including:
• Log homes, log checks.
Wood windows and door trim, baseboards, and crown molding.
• Wood siding, including Pine, Cedar, Redwood and many others.
• Where wood siding meets corner boards, chimneys or brick.
• Adheres well to most standard building materials.

Where Not To Use Sashco Conceal Caulk
Surfaces previously coated with a waxy or non-drying oil coating
Surfaces specifically designed to be non-stick, like Kynar coated.
Surfaces previously sealed with silicone – silicone and silicone residue must first be removed.
• Areas of continuous submersion.
• Areas exposed to foot or vehicular traffic.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Application Methods
• When using 5-gallon pails grout bags, or Bulk Loading Guns may be used.
• Use a Cartridge Caulking Gun when using either the 29 oz. or 10.5 oz. cartridges of Conceal.
• When using a cartridge, cut the spout at a 45° angle to desired bead size.
• Conceal requires no heating prior to application but will dispense easier when kept warm before use.
• Conceal should be tooled directly after application to ensure good adhesion and a smooth looking bead.
• Conceal may be tooled with ordinary masonry-type tooling blades, a wetted finger, or a damp polyethylene foam brush.
• Work the material smooth, tooling Conceal tightly to the surfaces, keeping a rag handy for clean up.

How to Measure My Caulking Project
• There are two dimensions that you need to know in order to determine how much product you will need: the width and the cumulative length (linear feet) of the gaps or joints that you want to seal.
Figuring the Width: If it is a joint on a squared log it is the average distance between upper and lower log surfaces. If it is round log joint you first have to insert a length of proper size Grip Strip or backer rod and then measure the distance between the top and bottom logs about 3/8 of an inch in front of the surface of the chosen backing product.
Figuring the Cumulative Length (Linear Feet): It is best if you break it down to one wall at a time then add all of the walls together it becomes much simpler. Start by measuring the length of the wall with a tape measure. Then count the number of joints you need to seal. Usually it is the number of log courses minus one. When you multiply these two numbers together you have the linear feet of sealant required for that wall.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Application Information
Proper substrate preparation and application are imperative for product longevity.
• Conceal is not a chinking and should be used in joints under 2” wide. If the joints are wider, we recommend Sashco Log Jam Chinking.
• Make certain there is compatibility between your stain and Conceal. Sashco recommends either Sashco’s Capture Stain and Cascade Topcoat System, Transformation Log & Timber, or Transformation Siding and Trim for exterior applications and Symphony Interior clear coat for beautiful long-term protection.
• Best results are obtained when Conceal is applied to clean, stained wood.
• Check the weather forecast. Finishing products are best applied in moderate weather conditions, i.e., out of direct sunlight, in dry, warm conditions.
• Check the surface temperature. Apply Sashco Conceal Caulk when the surface temperature of the wood is between 40°F (4°C) - 90°F (32°C).
• It is always best to use a bond breaker (usually backer rod) before caulking. Sashco strongly recommends the use of backer rod, especially if the home is new and/or the wood is subject to significant movement. If a bond breaker is not used, expect more caulking repairs.
• Tool Conceal to help ensure good contact with the wood surfaces. This will greatly aid adhesion.
• Ideal caulk depth is half of the joint width, but no less than 1/4” and no more than 1/2”.
• Sashco Conceal Caulk is paintable with latex coatings after a minimum of 24 hours curing (longer on wider joints) and after 5 days with most oil-based coatings.
• Cure-Through Time: 3 weeks (1/2" thickness, 70°F, 50% relative humidity).

Sashco Conceal Caulk Surface Preparation
• Best results are obtained when Conceal Caulk is applied to wood that has been previously coated with a compatible and thoroughly cured stain.
• If a Sashco stain is not being used, make certain that the stain is compatible with Conceal Caulk. If the stain is older but still intact, clean the log surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, pollen, bird droppings and other surface contaminants.
• If a stain is applied over Conceal Caulk, it will be tinted the stain color, but will be affected differently than the surrounding wood; therefore, test appearance before widespread use.
• A few coatings, especially those high in wax content, nondrying oils, or silicones may interfere with adhesion, whether they are applied before or after Conceal Caulk. Sashco advises against using Conceal Caulk with such products.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Paintability & Compatibility
• Paintable with latex coatings after a minimum of 24 hours curing (longer on wider joints) and after 5 days with most oil-based coatings.
• Conceal Caulk will adhere to woods treated with most preservatives including borates, pentachlorophenol, and copper compounds.
• Some borate wood preservatives contain glycols or other agents that could interfere with adhesion. Sashco’s PeneTreat® contains no glycols.
• Conceal Caulk is also compatible with insulating glass sealants and most building materials, including foam insulation and vinyl windows.

Recommended Tools & Supplies For Applying Caulking
• Caulking gun(s). Click for Albion Caulking Guns and Tools.
• Closed Cell Backer-Rod in appropriate sizes, or other backing materials such as EPS Foam or Grip Strip.
• Sharp knives suitable for trimming backer-rod.
• Trowels, spatulas, or foam brushes for tooling
• Clean, lint-free rags for wiping down log surfaces, for spills, runs and cleanup.
• Spray adhesive (such as 3M™ 77) for installing backer-rod.
• Staple gun & staples (if necessary to help with backer rod installation)
• Sheets of heavy plastic or canvas to protect job site from spills and inclement weather.
• Adequate quantity of caulking.

How to Tool Sashco Conceal Caulk
• Conceal should be tooled directly after application to ensure good adhesion and a smooth looking bead. Conceal may be tooled with ordinary masonry-type tooling blades, a wetted finger, or a damp polyethylene foam brush.
• Work the material smooth, tooling Conceal tightly to the surfaces, keeping a rag handy for clean up.

How to Apply Sashco Conceal Caulk
Stacking Application: Apply bead(s) according to the log home manufacturer’s instructions. Stack the next log and repeat. Do not allow caulk to skin over prior to staining.
Milled Tongue & Groove Logs: Install backer rod into the caulk well of clean, stained logs. Gun Conceal over the backer rod. Tool to ensure a tight seal to the top and bottom of the caulk line.
Swedish Cope Logs: Gun Conceal into clean, stained joints. Tool to ensure a tight seal to the top and bottom of the caulk line leaving at least ¼” depth of caulk in the center of the joint.
Cracks & Checks: Install backer rod into a clean, stained check to the appropriate depth. Gun Conceal over the backer rod. Tool Conceal.
Special Note: Most small checks should not be caulked. Only the larger ones (1/4” or larger) should be sealed with backer rod and caulk.

Sashco Conceal Caulk Clean Up and Storage
• Clean excess product off surfaces (before it cures) with a putty knife and/or a damp rag.
• Tightly wrap nozzles of open cartridges with plastic wrap and a rubber band.
• Dispose of Conceal in accordance with local regulations.
• Do not dispose of in drinking water supplies.
• Hands, surfaces and equipment may be cleaned-up with water.
• Solvents are not required for clean-up.
• Store Conceal chinking in a clean, dry place and out of direct sunlight.
• Do not allow the material to freeze.

Product Questions

  • Is it better to caulk lighter or darker than the stain?

It is always best to try and match your caulk as closely to the stain that will be used to create a more uniform appearance.  Many caulks are textured which will accept the the stain color giving a blended look.  But you can go a little darker with the caulk color knowing that as your stain ages and darkens, your caulk will blend well.

  • I'm applying conceal outside log structure. What is the cure time before rain could damage it?

Below is some helpful guidance from Sashco on protecting the caulk when rain is in the forecast:

Water Resistance No washout (4 hours, 40 degrees , 50% relative humidity). In severe conditions - under 40 degrees and/or 70%+ humidity -- full rain resistance may take longer. Cover exterior walls with plastic if rainfall is expected with-in 24 hours after installation. Not recommended for continuous submersion or areas exposed to foot or vehicular traffic.

  • Can Conceal caulk be used on the interior of my home?

Yes. Sashco Conceal caulk can be used for the interior and exterior of your home. Please follow the application instructions as outlined on the Conceal information sheet.

  • Will Conceal caulk stick to stone surfaces or where the metal roof meets the logs?

Conceal caulk will adhere very well to stone such as a fireplace or masonry as long as it is not exposed to high temperatures. Conceal will also adhere to clean aluminum but should not be exposed to areas that experience large volumes of water such as gutters and flashings. We would suggest Sashco Lexel or Through The Roof for these high moisture areas.

  • Can Conceal caulk be used on a joint wider than 2 inches?

It is not recommended that Conceal caulk be used on joints over 2". It is suggested that a chinking compound be used for a joint over 2".

  • What is the difference between Log Builder caulk and Conceal caulk?

Log Builder caulk is a smooth, untextured caulk whereas Conceal is textured. Log Builder caulk will have a shiny finish when dry and Conceal will have more of a satin look.  The physical properties of Conceal and Log Builder (such as adhesion, elongation, and resistance to weathering) are very similar.

  • How warm does the temperature need to be to apply Conceal caulk?

Conceal caulk is a water based product that needs to be applied in temperatures between 40 and 90 degrees.

  • Should I caulk before I stain my house?

It would be best to stain your house before you caulk.  Conceal is a lightly textured caulk that you will be able to match close to the color of stain you choose. When the house settles and the joint moves, the stain over the caulk will have a tendency to want to crack.  Conceal caulk will stretch along with the settling but the cracked stain will remain on top. When it comes to restaining, you will have to stain over the caulk so just watch the finish for any cracks over the caulked areas.

  • How wide of a joint can I use Sashco Conceal on?

Sashco Conceal Textured Caulk can be used on up to 2" wide joints. Sashco recommends that the ideal caulking depth is half of the joint width, but not less than 1/4" or no more than 1/2". If the joints are over 2", it is recommended to use a chinking compound.
