Product Questions
-
What is the difference between Cetol 1 and Cetol 23?
Proluxe Cetol 1 is used as the first base coat for staining new or bare wood. The Cetol 23 is the topcoat which is applied over the Cetol 1. This requires two coats of the Cetol 23 with 24 hours between coats. So, you will have a total of three coats with this stain system. It will provide a beautiful, furniture finish look to the wood.
-
What is the difference between Cetol 23 and Cetol 23 RE?
Cetol 23 was the original Sikkens topcoat which was made and used for years. Later, this product became a VOC reduced emissions stain which is what the RE stands for. The regular version is no longer available and the RE version is the only topcoat available for the Cetol 1.
-
I have Cetol 1 / Cetol 23 on my house. Do I start again with Cetol 1 when doing a maintenance coat?
As long as there is no cracking or peeling happening with your current finish, you can go over the house with (1) coat of Cetol 23. The Cetol 1 is the primary or base coat followed by Cetol 23. If you do have any peeling going on, then you will need to do a light sanding in that area and use (1) coat of Cetol 1 and (2) coats of Cetol 23.

We have a log home previously finished with Cetol 1 and topcoated with 23. Many years later the sunny side is looking a bit oxidized (chalky). But after a good cleaning the Cetol 1 looks OK underneath. Can we just do a refresh topcoat of Cetol 23 or does the oxidization require more effort to deal with first?
Hello,
Thank you for your question. The key to your decision here is the condition of the stain that's left after the cleaning. With the Cetol 1/23 system, the Cetol 1 is a thin primer coat, and the Cetol 23 is a much thicker and slower drying tinted topcoat. Both parts are necessary, because while the 23 does most of the work repelling water and deflecting UV rays, it performs best on top of a good primer coat of Cetol 1.
In your case, I would first look for any areas that are worn down to bare wood. Those are the spots where Cetol 1 would be useful. Once you're confident that's complete, you're in a great position to start with Cetol 23. Stain one coat of Cetol 23, let it dry, then assess whether a second coat of Cetol 23 is needed. You'll want to search out areas that don't look quite as shiny as they should with a fresh application of Cetol 23. Please don't hesitate to call or email us if you have any questions at all. -
i have cetol 1 and 23 on my logs. im going to do maintenance 23. if i use natural before can i use cedar for my 23 now
Hello,
Thank you for your question. Absolutely, you can use any color from Cetol 23 over a previous application of Cetol 23. The Cedar (077) color tends to work well over Natural (078) because they share a lot of the same color tones, with Cedar just being the darker of the two colors. -
Can I still get 5 gallon pails of Cetol 1 in Mahogany?
Unfortunately, PPG no longer makes 5 gallon pails of either Mahogany (045) or Dark Oak (009) in the Sikkens Proluxe Cetol 1 and Cetol 23 product families. Both colors are still available, though, in 1 gallon pails in both Cetol 1 and Cetol 23.

I am putting in French mahogany entrance doors. I am going to use Cetol 1 for a first coat and then Cetol 23 for a second and third coat. My question is do I use Cetol 23 for the second and third coat on the interior of the door? Thank you.
Thank you for your question. Sikkens Tech Support confirmed that this should work just fine for you. I would recommend taking the door slab off the hinges and not do the application inside your living area. This way you can paint the edges easier and the fumes from the solvent will vent directly outside.

Can Cetol 23 be thinned?
It is not recommended that Sikkens Proluxe Cetol 23 be thinned. Thinning with mineral spirits may compromise the finish and performance of this product so be sure and stir thoroughly and use on top of Sikkens Proluxe Cetol 1 only.
-
I have used up my original Cetol 1 and now want to apply a coat of Cetol 23. Can I apply the Proluxe Cetol 23 over the original Cetol 1?
You should have no problem at all there. That is because the Sikkens Cetol 23 Plus RE is the same product as the Sikkens Proluxe Cetol 23 Plus RE. When Akzo Nobel sold Sikkens Wood Care to PPG, they required PPG to change the brand name after a few years. The PPG management has been adamant from the beginning that they would only be changing the name. Here is an excerpt from Sikkens Proluxe about the change:
Why is the brand name changing from SIKKENS to PROLUXE? The Sikkens brand is owned by AkzoNobel and has been licensed to PPG for North America. The agreement stipulates that we introduce a replacement brand and use Sikkens at a reduced size beginning in 2015. Are the products any different now that they have a new name? No, the formulas in the can are exactly the same as they were under Sikkens. The formulas are PPG's and we do not have to change them under the terms of the agreement. Only the name is changing. You can be confident that the product is the same in the can regardless of whether the name is Sikkens or ProLuxe. -
Is Cetol 23 Plus something different than Cetol 23?
I understand your confusion. There is no actual difference here. The official name of the product is Cetol 23 Plus, but it frequently is referred to more simply as Cetol 23.
-
I had a paint company stain my log sided cabin and was recommended to use this product because it was also good as having insecticide in it. But after reading the product info it states no claim at all. Is there any truth to this?
Unfortunately, Sikkens does not advertise that Cetol 23 Exterior Topcoat contains any insecticide. Most stain contractors and homeowners will add an insecticide additive such as Bug Juice or Bee Gone to the product to help with Carpenter Bees and other crawling insects.
