How Sikkens Became PPG ProLuxe and What This Means to You
We have recently been contacted by several of our returning customers asking for clarification after noticing the Sikkens line of stains had changed its name, as well as the appearance of its label. We’d like to share what you need to know about those changes and introduce you to the new line of products you are seeing in its place on our website from PPG ProLuxe.First of all, and most importantly, PPG ProLuxe is exactly the same product as Sikkens Wood Finishes. The name and label may have changed, but the formula inside has not.
When Twin Creeks Log Home Supply first began selling the Sikkens line of stains, the product came in a gray can with a large Sikkens logo. At that time, Sikkens was owned by Akzo Nobel, the largest paint manufacturer in Europe and the company responsible for bringing Sikkens to the United States in the 1990s.
In 2013, Akzo Nobel sold their North American Architectural Coatings division to PPG, which included the Sikkens line of wood finishes. Since Akzo Nobel still uses the Sikkens brand name in other markets, PPG was required to gradually transition Sikkens to a different brand name as part of the sale. PPG introduced the new “ProLuxe” brand name in 2015, and also updated the appearance of the can at the same time.
After the purchase by PPG, the Sikkens name was initially still included at the top of each label with the word “ProLuxe” added just beneath it. Over time, the Sikkens name grew smaller, while the ProLuxe name grew larger. Now the Sikkens branding has been dropped from the label altogether and replaced entirely with “PPG ProLuxe.”
Per their purchase agreement, PPG has now dropped all additional Akzo Nobel trademarked names. This means that in addition to “Sikkens,” the terms “Cetol,” “Rubbol,” and “DEK” will also be removed from all product names and labels later this year.
What does this mean for our customers? Simply put, some of the same products they have used for years will have a slightly different name, while the product itself will remain the same. For example, one of our most popular products, “Cetol Log & Siding Wood Finish” will now be simply known as “Log & Siding Wood Finish.” The product formula will not change. Please see the complete list of new product names below.
We understand that these name changes can be confusing, but we are proud to offer this line of wood finishes to our customers. We stand behind all of our quality products and recommend PPG ProLuxe for its beauty, ease of application, longevity, and finish. PPG will continue to sell through cans with both labels until their inventory is depleted. This means that if you order one of these stains from Twin Creeks Log Home Supply, it may be branded “Sikkens ProLuxe” or “PPG ProLuxe.” Either way, you are receiving the same product. We hope this explanation clarifies the confusion some have had regarding the new look of the ProLuxe cans. Please don't hesitate to call us if you have any questions.
